Swakopmund
Swakopmund Travel Guide: The Best Things to Do in Namibia’s Coastal Gem
Why Visit Swakopmund?
Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, Swakopmund is Namibia’s adventure capital and a must-visit destination for travelers – whether they’re after adrenaline or relaxation. With its charming German colonial architecture, stunning desert scenery, and a wide range of activities, this chic town is the ideal place to experience a unique blend of cultures and landscapes.
What is Special about Swakopmund?
Unique History
The coastal city was founded by German colonisers in 1892 and served as their harbour. Because of the rough Atlantic coast, boats had to be offloaded on the open ocean – this proved quite an adventure for cargo and passengers alike. The local museum has some fascinating artefacts from this early period. There are also many buildings still in use today that are over 100 years old.
Popular Summer Destination
Swakopmund is somewhat of an oasis in the desert, lying next to the river that gave it its name. In the days of old, people from inland (including the administration) spent the summers here. Even today, it fills up with visitors when it gets too hot elsewhere.
Quirky Wonders of the Coast
Swakopmund boasts one of the only five all-grass desert golf courses in the world. Occasionally, exotic animals visit the area: in 2019, an elephant bull wandered down from Damaraland because of the drought, and there are rumours of a peregrine falcon being spotted.
Not only that, it is home to the largest known quartz crystal cluster, on display at the Kristallgalerie (crystal gallery).
What does “Swakopmund” mean in English?
The name is German and translates to “mouth of the Swakop”. Fitting, since this lovely seaside destination is built right at the edge of the Swakop River – one of the largest ephemeral rivers in Namibia.
Originally, the word “Swakop” was a bastardisation of the Khoekhoe “tsaoxaub”, which described the brown slush mixed with trees and animal carcasses that the river carried to the sea when it flowed during the rainy season.
How do you pronounce “Swakopmund”?
SWUH-kop-moond (with a short oo like in “book”).

Swakopmund’s dunes offer the perfect terrain for quad biking and sandboarding.
