The Damaraland 4×4 Loop: A 7-Day Self-Drive Route

The ideal way to experience Damaraland by self-drive is as a loop: starting and ending at the same point, covering the main sites in a sequence that makes logistical sense, and avoiding the need to backtrack over the same roads twice. This seven-day loop, beginning and ending in Outjo, covers the full geographic range of Damaraland from the accessible central circuit to the remote west, and connects the region’s major wildlife, geological, and heritage experiences in a coherent sequence.

What You Need

Vehicle: A capable 4×4 with high clearance (minimum 250mm), low-range gearing, and at least one full-size spare tyre. A second spare is advisable for the western sections.

Fuel: Dual tanks or a 20-litre jerry can. The longest confirmed gap without reliable fuel is Kamanjab to Palmwag, approximately 200km. Plan every leg before departure. The fuel stops guide has the complete breakdown.

Navigation: Tracks4Africa GPS maps loaded on a dedicated device. Offline maps on a phone as backup.

Water: A minimum 10-litre reserve in the vehicle at all times for the western sections.

Communication: A satellite communicator (Garmin inReach or similar) for the western routes where mobile coverage is absent.

Accommodation: Khorixas Rest Camp or Huab Lodge Road condition: Good gravel throughout

Day 2: Khorixas to Twyfelfontein (90km, 90 minutes)

Day 3: Twyfelfontein to Palmwag (200km, 3 hours)

Afternoon: wildlife drive in the Palmwag area. Night drive for nocturnal species.

Accommodation: Palmwag Lodge (second night)

Day 5: Palmwag to Ugab River (120km, 2 hours)

Drive south-east on the C35 then turn onto the track to Ugab Wilderness Camp. The landscape on this route passes through the transition zone between the Palmwag Concession and the escarpment country of the southern Damaraland region. Check in at Ugab Wilderness Camp; afternoon walk into the gorge with the camp’s guide.

Accommodation: Ugab Wilderness Camp Road condition: 4×4 required; track is rough in sections

Day 6: Ugab Gorge to Uis (150km, 2.5 hours)

Morning: two-hour gorge walk. Depart by 10:00. Drive east and south toward Uis through changing landscape. Arrive Uis early afternoon. Browse the tin art workshops on the main road. Late afternoon: drive out onto the plains south-east of Uis for Brandberg afterglow photography.

Accommodation: Brandberg White Lady Campsite or Uis guesthouse

Day 7: Brandberg White Lady Hike and Return to Outjo (280km, 5 hours including hike)

Early start (06:00) for the White Lady hike in the Tsisab Gorge. Back at the vehicle by 10:30 to 11:00. Drive east toward Outjo via the C35 and C38. The drive passes through the southern Damaraland escarpment and into the more settled country of the Outjo district.
