Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are situated in the heart of the Namib Desert, about 350 km (217 miles) southwest of Windhoek. They lie within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the largest conservation areas in Africa. The nearest settlement is Sesriem, which serves as the gateway to these attractions.
How to Get to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
By Road
The most common way to reach Sossusvlei is by self-drive or guided tour. The drive from Windhoek to Sossusvlei takes about 5-6 hours, and visitors should be prepared for long stretches of gravel roads. A 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially for the final 5km stretch of soft sand of the dry Tsauchab River beyond the 2WD parking area. This requires a short 4×4 drive to reach the final parking lot before reaching what is commonly referred to as the Deadvlei 4×4 parking lot.
For those travelers who are not as adventurous, there is a shuttle that transports people to the 4×4 parking lot.
- Windhoek to Sossusvlei: 350 km via B1 & C19 (5-6 hours)
- Swakopmund to Sossusvlei: 400 km via C14 (5-6 hours)
By Air
For a quicker and more scenic option, charter flights are available from Windhoek and Swakopmund to the nearby Sossusvlei airstrip, offering breathtaking aerial views of the dunes.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei is during the cooler months from April to October, when temperatures are more manageable. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting for photography and more comfortable hiking conditions.
