How to Plan a Trip to Zambia: What You Should Know
When should you visit Zambia?
The best time is the dry season in May or June: The weather is cooler and there is less vegetation to hide the wildlife.
How long should you stay?
8-10 days are enough to explore one or two national parks, but to see more of the country you’ll need 2-3 weeks.
Do you need a 4×4 vehicle?
Yes, and make sure it has GPS. Even the tarred roads can be full of potholes due to strong rains and most district roads are gravel or jeep tracks.
What documents and visas are needed?
You must have a valid passport, return ticket and travel insurance. There are different visas for different countries, with the popular KAZA Univisa allowing multiple entries between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zambian entry regulations are a little complex, so make sure to check with your nearest embassy.
Should you be vaccinated against anything?
Vaccinations are not mandatory for your holiday, unless you live in a yellow fever country. Do take precautions against malaria.
How expensive is Zambia?
While costs vary depend on travel style, Zambia is generally cheaper than Botswana but more expensive than South Africa.
Is Zambia safe for tourists?
With a few steps, you can ensure a safe, relaxing journey: Prepare properly for road trips, keep valuables out of sight and don’t walk around without a trusted local guide at night. Zambians are generally friendly and helpful and the vibrant culture will make you feel welcome immediately.
