Why Sossusvlei?
Sossusvlei, located in the heart of the Namib Desert, is famous for its towering dunes, some of the tallest in the world, and the striking contrast of the red sand against a vivid blue sky. This region is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, a place of dramatic beauty, and a balloon ride offers a unique perspective of this awe-inspiring landscape. From above, you’ll appreciate the scale of the endless dunes, the pans, and perhaps even spot wildlife like oryx, springbok, and ostriches roaming the desert floor.
The Hot Air Ballooning Experience:
What to Expect:
- Duration: The entire experience lasts approximately 4 hours, including a pre-flight briefing, the balloon flight itself (around 1 hour), and a post-flight celebration breakfast.
- Level of Difficulty: No prior experience is needed! The ride is smooth and peaceful, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels.
- You will need to be able to stand for the duration of the flight.
- Children under the age of 6 need to be at least 1.2m tall.
- Pregnant passengers are not permitted on the balloon for safety reasons.
- Views from Above: You’ll soar over the dramatic landscapes of the Sossusvlei area, with spectacular views of the ancient dunes, the surrounding mountains, and the endless desert plains below.

What to Bring:
- Comfortable, layered clothing (it can be chilly in the early morning, but it warms up quickly once the sun rises).

- A camera to capture the incredible views (binoculars are also a great idea for spotting wildlife).
Best Time to Visit:
Hot air ballooning over Sossusvlei is available almost year-round, closing only from the 15th of January – to the 15th of February which is the hottest time of the year. The best time is during the cooler months between April and October when the weather is more predictable. Early mornings are ideal for calm winds and clear skies, enhancing the overall experience.
Closed on the 25th of December & the 1st of January which are also important public holidays in Namibia.
