How to Plan a Trip to Botswana: What You Should Know
When should you visit Botswana?
The best time is the dry season from May to October. With moderate temperatures and no rain, game viewing is at its peak and driving easy.
How long should you stay?
7-12 days gives you a good all-round experience. Botswana is a little smaller than other African countries, so you can spend your days exploring in depth.
Do you need a 4×4 vehicle?
Yes, as only the major highways are tarred and sedans are not suitable for gravel. You can rent well-equipped vehicles for self-drives, and guided tours come with cars included. Especially in the Okavango Delta, off-road cars are a must.
What documents and visas are needed?
You must have a valid passport, return ticket and travel insurance. There are different visa regulations for different countries, so make sure to double-check.
Should you be vaccinated against anything?
Vaccinations are not mandatory for your holiday, unless you live or have stayed in a yellow fever country. The WHO recommends vaccinations against typhoid, hepatits A and B as well as polio.
How expensive is Botswana?
Due to its remoteness and exclusive travel offerings, Botswana is one of the most expensive countries in Africa. Mid-range safaris cost between USD 650 – 1,000 per day per person. However, the real wilderness experience is well worth the cost.
Is Botswana safe for tourists?
Yes, Botswana is a very safe country and it’s easy to reduce any risk even further. Keep valuables out of sight, car doors locked at all times and fill up on fuel regularly. Botswana police are active and locals are friendly and helpful. Make sure to have a good GPS for self-drives!
