NWR Skeleton Coast Camps: Torra Bay and Terrace Bay

The two NWR camps inside the southern Skeleton Coast National Park are as remote as NWR gets. Both require 280km of driving from Swakopmund; both sit at the end of the only road through the park; and both deliver a specific experience of coastal remoteness that is difficult to find elsewhere in Namibia.

Torra Bay

Open: December to January only. Accommodation: Camping pitches; communal ablutions (toilets and showers); braai facilities. What it offers: Beach fishing; the specific Skeleton Coast atmosphere in the height of summer; the sense of being at an outpost. Booking: Through NWR at nwr.com.na. The December to January period is popular with South African fishing families; book well in advance for the peak Christmas and New Year period.

Terrace Bay

Open: Year-round. Accommodation: A-frame chalets; some with sea views; a restaurant serving meals daily; a bar; a fuel pump. What it offers: The furthest accessible self-drive point on the Skeleton Coast; surf fishing; coastal walks; the beginning of the wilderness that extends northward without road access. Booking: Through NWR at nwr.com.na. Less competitive than Torra Bay for most of the year; the best fishing periods (April to August) see higher demand.

Practical Notes

Both camps require the Ugab gate entry fee. Fuel is available at Terrace Bay but the supply is not guaranteed; fill completely at Henties Bay before proceeding north. The camp shop at Terrace Bay has basic supplies; bring all food for your stay from Swakopmund.
