The Skeleton Coast is two destinations with the same name. Understanding which one you are planning for is the first step.
The southern section: Self-drive accessible; Cape Cross seal reserve; the C34 coastal road; fishing camps at Torra Bay and Terrace Bay. Accessible from Swakopmund as a day trip or overnight.
The northern wilderness: Fly-in only; desert lion and desert elephant; no roads; restricted access. Requires booking through a licensed operator. Premium pricing.
For the Southern Section
Contents
Day trip from Swakopmund: Cape Cross is 150km on the C34 (2 hours); comfortably done as a day trip with time at the colony. Henties Bay fuel stop recommended.
Overnight extension: Terrace Bay (280km from Swakopmund; 3.5 hours driving) provides the furthest-north accessible camp, with a genuine sense of being at the edge of the wilderness.

For the Northern Wilderness

Combining with Other Destinations
Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast are natural companions; most Skeleton Coast visitors base in Swakopmund for the southern drive. Damaraland connects from the interior via Kamanjab and the D2612 junction. Kaokoland extends the wilderness north.
