Eating and Drinking in Swakopmund: The Best Restaurants

Swakopmund punches above its population weight for restaurants. The coastal location provides excellent fish; the German colonial heritage produces good bakeries and café culture; and the steady flow of international visitors has created a restaurant market that is more diverse and higher quality than any Namibia town outside Windhoek.

The Best Options

The Tug: The most atmospheric restaurant in Swakopmund, built on the hull of a former harbour tugboat permanently moored on the beach. The seafood is the focus and the quality is consistent; the kabeljou (cob), kingklip, and snoek are local species worth ordering. The setting, with the beach visible through the windows and the Atlantic outside, is the other recommendation.

Lighthouse Pub and Restaurant: Casual, reliable, and well-positioned on the beach promenade. Good for lunch after a morning activity; the seafood platters are substantial and fairly priced.

Café Anton: The most traditional German-style café in town. The apple strudel, rye bread, and strong coffee are the reasons to visit. No apologies for being exactly what it is.

Swakopmund Brauhaus: The brewery-restaurant on Sam Nujoma Avenue; German-style food (schnitzel, bratwurst) with house-brewed beer. The most tourist-oriented of the recommendations but consistent quality.

Kücki’s Pub: A local institution; unpretentious; good for a drink after a day of activities; the local crowd makes it more genuine than the beach-front options.

Walvis Bay

The Raft: Walvis Bay’s landmark restaurant, built on a floating platform on the lagoon. The location above the water, with flamingo visible across the lagoon, is the primary draw; the seafood and oysters are good. A worthwhile detour from Swakopmund for at least one meal.

Practical Notes

Most Swakopmund restaurants accept credit cards. Booking ahead is recommended for dinner at The Tug on weekends and in peak season. Most restaurants are open seven days; hours vary, arriving at 18:00 for dinner is safe for all listed restaurants.
