Tok Tokkie Trails is one of Namibia’s most distinctive experiences and one of its least written-about. Over three days, a small group of walkers is guided through NamibRand Nature Reserve on foot, sleeping each night in a mobile camp on the open desert plain. There are no vehicles, no lodge buildings, and no guests beyond the group. It is the Namib experienced at walking pace, which means at a level of observation and connection that no vehicle-based visit can replicate.
The name comes from the tok-tokkie beetle (Psammodes species), which communicates by tapping its abdomen on the sand, a sound audible to a person lying with an ear to the desert floor.

Who It Suits
Tok Tokkie Trails suits visitors who:
- Have a genuine interest in ecology and natural history, not just species sightings
- Are comfortable walking 15 to 20km per day on soft terrain
- Want solitude and an uncrowded wilderness experience
- Are visiting in new moon conditions (the dark sky is integral to the experience)
- Are comfortable with the bush sleeping situation (the infrastructure is good but the setting is the open plain)
It does not suit visitors who:
- Are primarily interested in large mammal sightings (the wildlife of NamibRand is present but not the primary focus)
- Need a predictable, infrastructure-heavy programme
- Have significant physical fitness limitations
Booking: Through NamibRand directly or through agents. The three-day format requires a minimum two-person booking. Contact Mat-Travel for availability and logistics.
