Fish River Canyon sits 530km south-east of Sossusvlei, making the combination a two-to-three day drive or a logical addition to a southern Namibia circuit that can continue to Lüderitz and the ghost towns of the Sperrgebiet before returning north. This is the route that most visitors to either destination do not take but should consider.
The Route
Sesriem → B4 south-east → Maltahöhe → B1/B4 south → Grünau → C37 → Hobas (Fish River Canyon north entrance)
Total: 530km; allow 6 to 7 hours driving.
The route passes through a section of southern Namibia that is rarely visited and genuinely distinctive: the orange escarpment country south of Maltahöhe, the transition from the Namib to the arid succulents of the south, and the dramatic approach to the canyon from the north.
Overnight option: Maltahöhe (approximately 190km from Sesriem; 2 to 2.5 hours) makes a practical midway stop. The Maltahöhe Hotel is a classic small-town Namibia establishment; the Duwisib Castle (30km detour) is an extraordinary German colonial structure in the middle of the southern Namibia desert.
What Fish River Canyon Adds
Fish River Canyon is the geological counterpart to Sossusvlei: where Sossusvlei shows the Namib’s accumulation, the canyon shows its erosion. The two landscapes together tell a more complete geological story of the Namibian desert environment.
The multi-day hiking trail at Fish River Canyon is one of Africa’s great long-distance walks, available May to September. Visitors combining Sossusvlei with the hike can structure the circuit around the hiking permit dates.

Extending to Lüderitz
From Fish River Canyon, the B4 west leads to Lüderitz (260km, 3 hours), the colonial port town with its extraordinary Jugendstil architecture and the Kolmanskop diamond mining ghost town immediately adjacent. Lüderitz adds two to three nights to the southern circuit and provides a completely different character from either dunes or canyon.
