Sossusvlei’s packing challenge is the temperature range. In June and July, the predawn temperature at the Dune 45 crest can approach 0°C while the midday temperature by 11:00 reaches 25°C. In October, the predawn is cool (12 to 15°C) and midday reaches 40°C. Layering that handles the full daily range without requiring a large bag is the central clothing challenge.
Clothing
Essential layers (any season):
- Thermal base layer top (predawn dune sessions in June to August can be very cold)
- Fleece or down mid-layer
- Windproof outer layer (the dune crest at 06:00 in June has real wind chill)
- Lightweight long-sleeved shirt for sun protection during the day
- Lightweight trousers or convertible zip-off trousers
- Wide-brim sun hat (non-negotiable; the reflected light from sand intensifies UV exposure)
- Buff or neck gaiter (sand protection in windy conditions)
Footwear:
- Barefoot or thin sandals for dune climbing (better grip in sand than trainers; faster to remove)
- Closed shoes for Sesriem Canyon walk
Sun Protection
The combination of direct sun and sand-reflected UV at Sossusvlei is more intense than most desert environments. Visitors consistently underestimate the burn risk on the dune faces.
- SPF 50+ sunscreen; reapply every 90 minutes
- Lip balm with SPF (the dune crest wind dries lips quickly)
- Sunglasses (polarised; reduces sand and sky glare)
Water
- Minimum 2 litres per person per day inside the park; 3 litres on dune climbing days
- Water is available at Sesriem camp; none between the camp and the 2×4 parking
Photography
The camera gear guide covers this in detail. Summary:
- Two batteries per camera body (cold nights drain batteries)
- Blower brush for daily lens cleaning
- Sealed camera bag for transport
- Tripod for astrophotography and predawn canyon sessions
What NWR Camps Provide
NWR Sesriem camp chalets include beds, bedding, and towels. Camping guests need their own tent, sleeping bag, and cooking equipment. The camp shop has basic supplies (water, snacks, limited groceries). The restaurant serves meals at the camp.
There is no general store between Solitaire and the camp. Stock up on food supplies in Solitaire (limited selection) or better yet in Rehoboth or Swakopmund before the drive.
