The Etosha-Damaraland combination is the most popular two-region Namibia itinerary, and for good reason. The two destinations complement each other almost perfectly: Etosha delivers high-density waterhole wildlife in a managed park setting; Damaraland delivers wild, unfenced wilderness with desert-adapted species and extraordinary geological heritage. Together they cover most of what makes Namibia exceptional.
The Route Options
Contents
Via Kamanjab and Hobatere (Recommended)
Exit gate: King Nehale Gate (north-west) or Galton Gate (west) Route: Exit Etosha → Kamanjab → Hobatere Concession → Palmwag or Twyfelfontein Total distance from Okaukuejo to Palmwag: Approximately 300km (4 to 5 hours)
This is the most rewarding route. The Hobatere Concession is a wildlife area bordering the north-western corner of Etosha with lion, elephant, and giraffe that move freely between the concession and the park. A night at Hobatere Lodge as a connection stop adds a wildlife dimension to what would otherwise be a driving day.
From Hobatere, the C35 west toward Palmwag follows the C35 through increasingly spectacular Damaraland landscape. Palmwag Lodge provides the western Damaraland base for black rhino tracking and Palmwag Concession wildlife.
The Damaraland side of this connection: Damaraland to Etosha
Via Kamanjab Direct (Faster)
Exit gate: Anderson Gate → Outjo → Kamanjab → C35 west Total distance from Okaukuejo to Khorixas: Approximately 350km (4 hours)
The faster option for visitors with limited time. Kamanjab is reached from Outjo on good tar; the C35 west provides good gravel to Khorixas and beyond. This route bypasses the Hobatere option but delivers the full Damaraland central circuit (Twyfelfontein, Petrified Forest, Vingerklip) from Khorixas.
Sequencing the Two Destinations
Etosha first, then Damaraland: The most common sequence for visitors arriving from Windhoek. Enter via Anderson Gate, do Etosha (2 to 4 nights), exit via King Nehale or Galton Gate, and proceed west into Damaraland.
Damaraland first, then Etosha: Less common but equally valid. Arriving in Damaraland directly from Windhoek or Swakopmund, completing the Damaraland circuit, and then connecting east to Etosha via Kamanjab.
Which is better: Neither sequence is definitively superior. Etosha first provides an immediate high-impact wildlife experience; Damaraland first provides a slower-building introduction to Namibia before the concentrated Etosha waterhole experience.
