These seven itineraries are built from our direct experience of what works. Each has been refined through seasons of practical feedback. Use them as frameworks; every one can be adjusted for your specific priorities, vehicle type, and budget.

Focus: Rock art and geology Vehicle: 2WD or 4×4 Base: Khorixas or Twyfelfontein area lodge Best for: First-time visitors; those combining Damaraland with Etosha or the coast; short break travellers from Windhoek
Day 1
Depart Windhoek or Outjo early. Drive north on the B1 to Otjiwarongo, then west on the C38 and C35 to Khorixas (approximately five hours total). Afternoon: drive to the Petrified Forest for a guided walk (approximately 45 minutes). Return to Khorixas for the night.
Accommodation: Khorixas Rest Camp or Huab Lodge
Day 2
Early departure. Drive to the Twyfelfontein area. Stop at the Organ Pipes for sunrise photography if timing allows, then Burnt Mountain, then the Twyfelfontein UNESCO engravings (allow 2 hours). Afternoon: drive the Aba-Huab River track for elephant sightings.
Accommodation: Mowani Mountain Camp, Camp Kipwe, or Aba-Huab Community Campsite
Day 3
Morning: return visit to Twyfelfontein for the afternoon-light photography if not done yesterday, or drive to Vingerklip (approximately 70km east). Afternoon return to Windhoek or Outjo (approximately four to five hours).
Itinerary 2: The 5-Day Highlights Circuit
Focus: Wildlife and heritage Vehicle: 4×4 Best for: Most first-time Damaraland visitors; those wanting both wildlife and geological sites
Day 1
Windhoek to Khorixas via B1/C35. Afternoon: Petrified Forest.
Day 2
Khorixas to Twyfelfontein area. Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain in the morning. Twyfelfontein guided tour (mid-morning). Afternoon: Aba-Huab River elephant track.
Day 3
Twyfelfontein to Palmwag (approximately 200km via C39 and C35). Afternoon wildlife drive in the Palmwag area. Night drive for brown hyena and nocturnal species.
Accommodation: Palmwag Lodge (room or campsite)
Day 4
Full day at Palmwag: morning rhino tracking with SRT rangers (pre-book through lodge). Afternoon rest; sundowner drive.
Day 5
Palmwag to Uis via C35. Stop at Brandberg for afternoon photography from the plains. Overnight at Uis or drive south to Spitzkoppe (additional 2 hours).
Itinerary 3: The 7-Day Wildlife Focus
Focus: Black rhino, desert elephant, desert lion Vehicle: Fly-in or guided road; no self-drive access to the core camps Best for: Wildlife-first travellers; those whose priority is rhino and elephant encounters
Days 1 to 3
Desert Rhino Camp. Morning rhino tracking on foot. Afternoon wildlife drives for Hartmann’s zebra, oryx, and desert lion. Night drives for nocturnal species.
Days 4 and 5
Damaraland Camp or Doro !Nawas Camp. Morning and afternoon desert elephant drives on the Huab River. Community walk. Cultural visit.
Days 6 and 7
Either extend at one property for a third night plus a Twyfelfontein day trip, or add Etendeka Mountain Camp for a different ecosystem and walking safari experience.
Itinerary 4: The 7-Day Self-Drive Circuit
Focus: Complete Damaraland by road Vehicle: 4×4 essential for the western sections Best for: Independent travellers; overlanders; those who want to cover the full geographic range
Day 1
Windhoek to Outjo/Kamanjab. Overnight Kamanjab.
Day 2
Kamanjab to Palmwag via C35. Afternoon wildlife drive.
Accommodation: Palmwag Lodge
Day 3
Palmwag: full day. Morning rhino tracking. Afternoon elephant drives west of Palmwag.
Day 4
Palmwag to Twyfelfontein via C35 and C39. Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain en route. Afternoon: Twyfelfontein engravings.
Accommodation: Mowani or Camp Kipwe
Day 5
Twyfelfontein area: Aba-Huab River elephant track in the morning. Vingerklip in the afternoon. Return to Twyfelfontein or overnight at Vingerklip Lodge.
Day 6
Vingerklip or Khorixas to Brandberg via Uis. Afternoon photography from the Uis plains.
Accommodation: Brandberg White Lady Campsite or Uis guesthouse
Day 7
Brandberg White Lady hike (depart 06:30). Afternoon: south toward Spitzkoppe or return to Windhoek.
Itinerary 5: The 7-Day Photography Circuit
Focus: Landscape, wildlife, and rock art photography Vehicle: 4×4 Best for: Serious photographers structuring the trip around light windows
Day 1
Windhoek to Spitzkoppe. Arrive before sunset. Shoot boulder field and sunset. Night: Milky Way session (new moon permitting).
Accommodation: Spitzkoppe campsite
Day 2
Early: Spitzkoppe dawn. Drive north to Brandberg. Late afternoon: plains photography from Uis.
Accommodation: Brandberg campsite or Uis guesthouse
Day 3
Sunrise at Brandberg. Drive to Twyfelfontein. Organ Pipes at midday (arrive before crowd peak). Afternoon: Twyfelfontein engravings in raking late-afternoon light (15:00 to 17:00).
Accommodation: Mowani Mountain Camp
Day 4
Pre-dawn: Organ Pipes sunrise. Burnt Mountain. Drive to Palmwag. Afternoon: Palmwag wildlife drive.
Accommodation: Palmwag Lodge
Day 5
Morning rhino tracking at Palmwag. Afternoon desert elephant drives (15:00 to 18:30 window for best light).
Day 6
Drive to Vingerklip (120km). Sunset silhouette photography.
Accommodation: Vingerklip Lodge
Day 7
Vingerklip morning. Drive back to Windhoek via Khorixas and C35/B1.
Itinerary 6: The 5-Day Family Circuit
