The Naukluft Hiking Trail is not the most famous multi-day hike in Namibia, the Fish River Canyon trail carries more international recognition, but among Namibian hikers it carries a specific reputation for difficulty, scenery, and the quality of solitude it delivers. The 120km route through the Naukluft Mountains covers terrain that ranges from canyon floor to exposed plateau, with daily distances that push most hikers to their limit.
This is not a trail for beginners or for those who underestimate Namibian conditions.

The Route
The trail is a loop departing from and returning to the Naukluft campsite. Daily stages average 15 to 18km but vary significantly in difficulty depending on terrain. The route crosses canyon floors, limestone plateaus, rocky ridgelines, and open mountain grassland.
Water: Permanent springs and pools are marked on the route. Carry sufficient water between reliable sources; distances vary.
Navigation: The trail is marked with footprints and paint markers on rocks. GPS is useful as backup but experienced hikers navigate by markers.
Key stages: The plateau section on days 3 and 4 exposes hikers to full sun on open terrain; start early. The canyon descent on day 6 is technically the most demanding section. The Zebra Highway plateau, named for the Hartmann’s mountain zebra frequently encountered there, is the most spectacular landscape on the route.
Preparation
Fitness: The trail is consistently rated among Namibia’s more demanding multi-day routes. A training programme of at minimum 3 months including regular loaded hiking is strongly recommended. Do not attempt this trail on general fitness alone.
Footwear: Good ankle support is essential on the rocky terrain. Trail running shoes are insufficient; proper hiking boots are required.
Heat management: Starting each day at 05:00 to 06:00 and completing the majority of distance before midday is the standard approach. The plateau sections in particular require careful heat management.
Weight: Every gram of food, sleeping gear, and water matters on a route this length and difficulty. Calculate daily calorie requirements carefully and pack accordingly.
