Windhoek Travel Guide

Windhoek is where almost every Namibia trip starts and ends. The international airport (Hosea Kutako, 42km east of the city) receives flights from Frankfurt, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi, and other regional hubs; the car hire desks at the airport are where most self-drive trips begin; and the fuel stations and supermarkets in the city are the provisioning point for circuits north and south.

The question most visitors ask is how much time to spend in the city itself. The answer depends on what you have done and what you are interested in. Two nights at each end is the recommendation that most visitors who have followed it endorse; one night at each end is workable but slightly rushed.

The Essential Windhoek Itinerary

Day 1 (arrival): Collect rental vehicle; check into hotel; late afternoon walk in the city centre (Christuskirche; Post Street Mall; Craft Centre if open); dinner at Joe’s Beerhouse.

Day 2 (day trip or city): Half-day Cheetah Conservation Fund (45km north; 09:00 to 13:00) or Daan Viljoen game reserve (25km west; 07:00 to 11:00); afternoon Katutura township tour; evening at The Stellenbosch Wine Bar.

Day 3 (departure): Return vehicle; Hosea Kutako airport check-in.

Getting Around

Car: The most practical option; Windhoek is a driving city with good parking in all commercial areas.

Taxis: Available and reliable; negotiate the fare before departure; not metered. The reception of any hotel can call a reputable taxi.

Uber: Available in Windhoek; works reliably in the central and suburban areas.

Walking: The city centre is walkable; the suburbs are not; the Katutura township is not appropriate for independent walking visits.
