Windhoek is a compact city by the standards of any African capital. Most visitor attractions and hotel areas are within 5km of the central city; Hosea Kutako airport is the main exception at 42km east.
By Car
Most visitors to Namibia have hired a vehicle for their circuit; the car is the natural way to navigate Windhoek. Parking is available in all commercial areas: street parking in the city centre (paid; attendants issue tickets); the Grove Mall and other shopping centres have ample free parking.
Key routes:
- Airport to city centre: B6 west then Independence Avenue; 45 minutes to 1 hour in peak morning traffic
- City centre to Eros (hotels): 5 to 10 minutes
- City centre to Katutura: 15 minutes
By Taxi
Windhoek taxis do not have meters; agree the fare before departure. Standard fares from central Windhoek to major hotels: NAD 100 to 150. Airport to city: NAD 300 to 500 (higher in the small hours). Your hotel reception is the most reliable source of reputable taxi contacts.
By Uber
Uber operates in Windhoek and is generally reliable in the central and suburban areas. The app works on local SIM cards and international roaming; pricing is comparable to negotiated taxis.
Praktische Notizen
Fuel: Fill the vehicle in Windhoek before heading into the Namibian interior; fuel is more expensive and less reliably available at remote destinations.
Traffic: Morning rush (07:00 to 08:30) and evening rush (16:30 to 18:00) create congestion on the main arterials; allow extra time for airport transfers during these windows.
Security: Windhoek is safer than many African capitals but standard urban precautions apply; do not leave valuables visible in parked vehicles.
