Cape Fur Seals at Walvis Bay and Cape Cross

Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) are encountered in two completely different contexts near Swakopmund: in small to medium groups in Walvis Bay lagoon (accessible by kayak and boat at close range), and in overwhelming, multisensory concentrations at Cape Cross Seal Reserve (150km north).

Walvis Bay: Close Encounters

The seal colony at the harbour mouth breakwater numbers several hundred individuals and is habituated to the daily kayak and boat activity. The kayaking with seals experience produces the most intimate encounters: seals approach kayakers voluntarily, investigate the hull and paddles, and spend extended time alongside individual boats. This is one of the finest wildlife encounters on the Namibian coast.

From the catamaran cruise, the seal colony is approached from the water and individuals are close enough for clear observation.

Behaviour: Cape fur seals are social and playful. Females and pups occupy the main colony area; adult males establish territorial positions on the rocks and compete vocally and physically during the breeding season (October to December).

Cape Cross: Overwhelming Scale

Cape Cross is something different entirely. The seal reserve 150km north of Swakopmund holds over 100,000 Cape fur seals at peak season, making it the largest accessible seal colony in the world. The viewing area above the main colony puts you within 10 to 20 metres of thousands of animals simultaneously.

The overwhelming quality of Cape Cross is sensory rather than merely visual: the smell of a large marine mammal colony reaches you before you see the seals; the noise of thousands of vocalisations is audible from the car park; the sheer density of bodies across every available rock surface creates a visual texture unlike any other wildlife encounter.

Best season: October to December (pupping season; highest numbers; most behaviour); year-round for substantial numbers. Access: Self-drive on the C34 tar road; 2WD accessible; NWR entry fee.
