- Recovery boards (2 minimum; branded options: MaxTrax, Bush Tracks)
- High-lift jack plus base plate (the base plate prevents the jack sinking in sand)
- Tow rope rated for vehicle weight; 2 shackles
- Full-size spare tyre (checked for correct pressure before departure)
- Tyre repair kit (plugs, CO2 inflators or compressor)
- Axe or bow saw (for clearing fallen trees from tracks)
- Basic spares: extra engine oil, coolant, fan belt, fuses
Water
- Minimum 20 litres per person for interior expeditions (drinking; cooking; washing)
- Water filter (Sawyer Squeeze or equivalent) for emergency use
- Collapsible water containers for filling at known sources
Food
- 7 days of provisions from Opuwo; nothing is available in the interior
- Prioritise foods that do not require refrigeration after opening
- A gas cooker with sufficient gas for the expedition duration
Navigation and Communication
- GPS device (Garmin or equivalent) loaded with Tracks4Africa
- Satellite communicator (Garmin inReach or SPOT)
- Paper map backup: Tracks4Africa 1:1,000,000 for the Kunene Region
- Compass
First Aid
- Comprehensive kit including wound closure strips, antiseptic, sterile dressings
- Anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen; for muscle injuries)
- Rehydration sachets (essential for heat conditions)
- Antihistamine (for insect bites and mild allergic reactions)
- Any personal prescription medications with sufficient supply plus 50%
Camping Gear
- Tent rated for wind (the Kaokoland wind can be severe)
- Sleeping bag appropriate for night temperatures (cold in June and July)
- Headtorch with spare batteries
- Camp chairs and table (optional but appreciated after a long day’s driving)
