Camping in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay

Swakopmund does not have the NWR campsite infrastructure that Etosha and Sossusvlei offer, but there are several private campsite options suitable for overlanders and independent travellers.

Options

Alte Brücke Resort (Swakopmund): The main campsite option in Swakopmund; on the Orange River resort complex north of town; camping pitches with electricity and ablutions; caravan and tent camping accepted; swimming pool; the most established campsite in the area.

Swakopmund Municipal Campsite: Basic; in the town area; facilities are limited but the location is convenient.

Walvis Bay: The Esplanade area in Walvis Bay has limited camping options; most overlanders base at Swakopmund and day-trip to Walvis Bay for the lagoon activities.

Overlander Notes

Swakopmund is a natural stopping point on the B2 coastal route between the Orange River border (Cape Town direction) and northern Namibia. The town has full vehicle servicing, tire repair, supermarkets, and fuel. Allow at least one day for activities rather than treating it purely as a transit stop.

The C34 north toward the Skeleton Coast and Cape Cross is 2WD accessible to Terrace Bay; overlanders continuing into the northern Skeleton Coast wilderness require permits and 4×4.
