Windhoek to Damaraland: Best Route, Stopovers and Driving Tips

The drive from Windhoek to Damaraland is the beginning of most self-drive Namibia itineraries, and it is a drive worth approaching thoughtfully rather than rushing through. The total distance to the central Damaraland sites is between 400 and 700km depending on your destination; the road quality is good on the main routes; and the landscape changes progressively from the commercial farmland of the central plateau to the increasingly dramatic semi-arid country of the north-west.

The Main Route: Windhoek to Khorixas

Distance: approximately 450km Driving time: 5 to 6 hours (excluding stops) Road condition: Tar to Otjiwarongo; good gravel from Outjo to Khorixas

Step by Step

Windhoek to Otjiwarongo (250km, 2.5 hours): The B1 north from Windhoek is a good tar road through the central Namibian plateau. Pass through Okahandja (fuel and small-town services available) and continue north. The landscape is flat-to-rolling mixed farm and bushveld, unremarkable but fast.

Otjiwarongo (brief stop): Otjiwarongo is a serviceable town with fuel, supermarkets, and the Cheetah Conservation Fund headquarters nearby for those with a wildlife interest. Allow 30 minutes for services.

Otjiwarongo to Outjo (60km, 45 minutes): Turn west onto the C38. The road continues on tar through good farmland country. Outjo is the last major town before entering Damaraland proper.

Outjo (essential stop): This is where you provision for the Damaraland interior. Outjo has fuel (two reliable stations), a Shoprite supermarket, a pharmacy, and a bank with a reliable ATM. Fill your tank completely here. Buy any specialist food items, medications, and cash you’ll need for the next several days. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.

Outjo to Khorixas (150km, 1.5 to 2 hours): Turn north-west onto the C35. The road is good gravel from here, and the landscape begins to change: lower rainfall, sparser vegetation, the first hints of the volcanic country ahead. The drive is pleasant and not demanding. Watch for livestock, particularly at dawn and dusk.

Khorixas: Arrival at the central Damaraland hub. The Khorixas guide covers accommodation, services, and day-trip options.

The Route to Palmwag (Western Damaraland)

Distance from Windhoek: approximately 650km Driving time: 7 to 8 hours

Continue past Khorixas on the C35 west. The road continues as good gravel. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic: volcanic hills, dry riverbeds, sparse vegetation. Pass through Kamanjab (fuel; last reliable stop before Palmwag).

Kamanjab (critical stop): Fill completely here. The gap between Kamanjab and Palmwag is approximately 200km with no confirmed fuel in between. Do not underestimate this; see the fuel stops guide for the full picture.

Kamanjab to Palmwag (200km, 2.5 to 3 hours): The road continues on the C35, increasingly corrugated and increasingly empty. The landscape is superb: the Palmwag valley opens below as you descend from the Damaraland escarpment, and on a clear day the western hills give a sense of the vast wilderness beyond.

Alternative Route: Via the Coast (Swakopmund)

Distance from Windhoek to central Damaraland via Swakopmund: approximately 600km Driving time: 6 to 7 hours

Route: Windhoek → B1 south → C28 west (via Rehoboth and the Tropic of Capricorn) or → Windhoek → B6 east of the city → C28 west → Walvis Bay / Swakopmund → B2 north → Spitzkoppe or Brandberg → north into Damaraland

This coastal route is significantly longer in distance but offers the coast as a staging point and allows Spitzkoppe to be visited en route to central Damaraland. It suits visitors who want a few days at the coast before moving into the desert interior, or who are combining Damaraland with the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei in a southern loop.

Swakopmund: Full services including accommodation, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, and an ATM. An excellent provisioning stop before heading into Damaraland.

When to Depart

Recommended departure time from Windhoek: 07:00 to 07:30

This timing allows you to arrive at the first Damaraland sites by early afternoon without rushing. A later departure compresses the first day into either a long drive or a late arrival in fading light. An earlier departure (05:30 to 06:00) is only necessary if you are targeting a specific site at the far end of the drive (Palmwag or Brandberg) and want to arrive in time for an afternoon activity.

What to Do Along the Way

Otjiwarongo: Cheetah Conservation Fund If cheetahs are of interest, the CCF headquarters outside Otjiwarongo offers tours of their cheetah care and research centre. The organisation is internationally respected and the visit is genuinely informative. Allow two hours; booking in advance is recommended for tours.

Roadside Wildlife The C35 between Outjo and Khorixas passes through increasing wildlife country as you head west. Oryx, kudu, and springbok are commonly seen from the road from Kamanjab onward. Slowing to 40km/h and spending 10 minutes at any waterhole near the road is often productive.

Road Conditions and Driving Tips

B1 north (Windhoek to Otjiwarongo): Excellent tar; straightforward driving; watch for speed traps in small towns.

C38 (Otjiwarongo to Outjo): Good tar; no concerns.

C35 (Outjo to Khorixas): Good gravel; some corrugation; drive at 80km/h maximum; watch for livestock.

C35 (Kamanjab to Palmwag): Gravel; increasingly rough corrugation in sections; 4×4 recommended; 70km/h or below; livestock and wildlife at any time.

General advice: Do not drive at night. Livestock and wildlife on the road, combined with the lack of street lighting outside towns, make night driving on Namibian gravel roads genuinely dangerous. Plan your driving day to be off the road before sunset.

Accommodation on the Route

If breaking the drive into two days (recommended for visitors who want to arrive in Damaraland rested):

Outjo (midpoint overnight): Several guesthouses and a rest camp. The Etosha Garden Hotel is comfortable and well-located.

Kamanjab (further north): A guesthouse or two in town; basic but functional.

Khorixas (first Damaraland night): Die Khorixas guide covers accommodation options.
