Kaokoland’s accommodation infrastructure is minimal by design. The region’s wilderness character requires minimal infrastructure; the accommodation that exists ranges from comfortable hotel in Opuwo to community campsite at Epupa to wild camping in the valley.
Opuwo
Opuwo Country Hotel: Mid-range; swimming pool; air conditioning; restaurant; reliable facilities. The most comfortable base for the Kaokoland region and the natural starting point for any interior expedition. Booking: through the hotel directly or through Mat-Travel.
Opuwo Lodge: Alternative mid-range option; similar facilities to the Country Hotel.
Epupa Falls
Community campsite (Himba-managed): Basic camping in the Makalani palm grove above the falls. The most atmospheric option available. Pay on arrival; no booking system. Full guide: Epupa camping.
Epupa Falls Lodge: A small private lodge adjacent to the falls; tented accommodation with views of the cascade; restaurant. Better facilities than the community campsite; book directly.
Sesfontein and Palmwag
At the southern edge of Kaokoland, Palmwag Lodge is the most established private lodge for the southern Kaokoland and Damaraland/Kaokoland junction. The Rhino Camp at Palmwag is a tented camp specifically for the black rhino tracking programme.
Interior Camping
In the Marienfluss Valley, Hartmann Valley, and along the approach tracks, community campsites managed by Himba families are available at designated points. These are basic (fire ring; basic toilet; no other facilities) and contribute directly to the family’s income. Wild camping beyond designated community sites is not appropriate in this communal land.
