The Epupa Falls campsite is managed by the local Himba community and operates on a pay-on-arrival basis. There is no booking system, no reception in the conventional sense, and no guarantee of availability at peak times. What there is: one of the most atmospheric camping locations in Namibia.
The Site
The campsite occupies a section of the Makalani palm grove immediately above the main falls cascade. Individual pitches are defined by the palm trees themselves; each pitch has a fire ring and enough flat ground for a tent. The edge of the camping area overlooks the cascade, with a viewing point accessible on foot.
Facilities:
- Pit toilets at the edge of the camping area
- Cold shower (gravity-fed from a holding tank)
- Firewood available from the camp manager
- No electricity; solar charging is not available at the site
The community camp manager collects fees in the morning and is available for local information about the Himba village visits and the best swimming spots.
Swimming
The pools below the falls, accessible by a short walk from the campsite, are safe for swimming outside the high water months. Crocodile presence in the Kunene River is real; the specific pools below the Epupa cascade are monitored by locals and are considered safe for swimming in the dry season (May to November). Do not swim in the main river current or in areas the camp manager has not confirmed safe. In the high-water months (December to April), swimming anywhere in the Kunene is inadvisable.
The Himba Village
A Himba village is located adjacent to the campsite. The community that manages the campsite is the same community; the relationship between camping guests and the village is a daily reality rather than a managed cultural encounter. Approach any visit to the village respectfully: ask before photographing; bring small practical gifts rather than sweets for children (soap, coffee, tea, tobacco for adults are appropriate). The community earns income from the campsite; additional economic transactions (craft purchases; photography permission fees) support individuals directly.
Praktische Notizen
Arrival: The earlier you arrive in peak season, the better your pitch choice. Supplies: Bring all food and sufficient water from Opuwo; there is nothing available at Epupa beyond firewood. Fuel: Fill completely in Opuwo; the nearest fuel beyond Opuwo on the C43 does not exist reliably. Night temperatures: Cold in June and July despite the daytime heat; bring adequate sleeping gear.
