If you are visiting Etosha with a specific interest in finding the black-faced impala, the park’s endemic subspecies, Klein Namutoni is the waterhole that delivers most consistently. The eastern section’s combination of acacia woodland and open approach roads provides habitat that suits the black-faced impala well, and the proximity of Klein Namutoni to Namutoni camp makes it an accessible morning and afternoon stop.
The Black-Faced Impala
The black-faced impala (Aepyceros melampus petersi) is distinguished from common impala by its more strongly marked dark facial colouring and its restricted range. Etosha holds the largest population. Klein Namutoni waterhole, within the core of the eastern section habitat, is where breeding herds and bachelor groups are most frequently seen.

Giraffe
Klein Namutoni is also one of the most reliable giraffe waterholes in Etosha. The proximity of the eastern acacia woodland to the open waterhole approach creates ideal giraffe habitat, and herds of six to ten individuals visiting the waterhole are regular morning sightings. Kudu
Greater kudu are more reliably encountered in eastern Etosha than in the open western section, and Klein Namutoni produces kudu sightings on most morning visits. Adult males with fully developed spiral horns are particularly striking animals; Etosha’s eastern woodland is one of the best kudu habitat areas in Namibia.
The Circuit from Namutoni
Klein Namutoni is the natural first stop on the morning circuit from Namutoni camp: close enough to reach shortly after gate opening (approximately 10km from the camp), productive for the eastern section’s characteristic species, and positioned to extend the circuit further toward Kalkheuwel or the Fischer’s Pan area.
