The B2 from Windhoek to Swakopmund is 360km of tar, entirely tar, entirely well-maintained, entirely straightforward. It is the most driven road in Namibia tourism after the B1 north to Etosha.

The drive leaves Windhoek heading north and joins the B2 at Okahandja, where you can turn into the town or bypass it completely. From there the B2 runs west, descends out of the Khomas Highland, and then crosses the transition zone between the central plateau and the Namib gravel plains before reaching the coast. The transition is visible in the vegetation: from thornbush to gravel desert to coastal fog-influenced vegetation in the final 50km.
For visitors with more time, the C28 gravel route via the Khomas Highland is a more scenic alternative that crosses the central Namib and passes the Welwitschia Flats on the way.
The B2 Road: Leg-by-Leg Distances
The B2 is tar for the whole 360km, well-maintained and well-signposted, and the three legs below are the only settlements of any size on it. Distances read the same in both directions, so the table answers the drive from Windhoek and the drive back from Swakopmund at once.

Swakopmund to Windhoek: The Return Drive
Swakopmund to Windhoek is 360km and takes 4 hours. It is the same B2, the same tar, and the same three legs read backwards: Swakopmund to Usakos 150km, Usakos to Karibib 30km, Karibib to Windhoek 180km.

Where the return leg genuinely differs. Driving west, Karibib at 180km is the natural break and the last full services before the coast. Driving east, the towns arrive in the opposite order and much closer together: Usakos comes first at 150km, then Karibib only 30km later at 180km. Both have fuel, but Karibib is still the better stop of the two, and after it there is nothing until Windhoek, 180km further on. Fill up before you leave Swakopmund if you would rather not stop at all.
The landscape runs in reverse too. The coastal fog belt gives way to the Namib gravel plains within the first 50km, then the transition zone, then the climb back onto the central plateau and into the thornbush of the Khomas Highland. The stretch that arrives as a descent on the way out is a steady climb on the way back.
Return timing. Leaving Swakopmund at 08:00 puts you in Windhoek around midday. Leaving at 12:00 puts you in Windhoek between 16:00 and 17:00. Treat the 4 hours as driving time only and add whatever your fuel and food stop takes.
Timing
4 hours for the drive; depart Windhoek by 08:00 to arrive Swakopmund before midday. An arrival before noon allows an afternoon Living Desert tour, the best possible Swakopmund start for any visitor with natural history interest.
Do not plan activities on the same day as an international arrival. A long flight, immigration and a 4-hour drive followed by an activity produces poor results.
