Where to Stay in Walvis Bay

Most visitors to the Walvis Bay lagoon base in Swakopmund (30km north) and day-trip to Walvis Bay for activities. Some visitors, particularly those with a specific birding or flamingo focus, prefer to stay in Walvis Bay itself for direct lagoon access and proximity to early-morning departures.

The Case for Staying in Walvis Bay

Direct lagoon access: The D1982 lagoon road and the harbour departure points for catamaran and kayak tours are immediately accessible from Walvis Bay accommodation.

Pelican Point: The spit at the lagoon mouth is more easily accessed from Walvis Bay for early-morning birding.

Lower cost: Walvis Bay accommodation is generally less expensive than Swakopmund’s equivalent standard.

Key Properties

The Raft Hotel: The lagoon restaurant-hotel built on a floating platform; the most unique accommodation in Walvis Bay; flamingo visible from the property in peak season; excellent seafood.

Pelican Bay Hotel: On the waterfront; good standard; reliable; close to catamaran and kayak departure points.

Various guesthouses: Walvis Bay has several mid-range guesthouses at lower prices than Swakopmund equivalents.

Practical Compromise

Two nights in Swakopmund (for the town character, the dune activities, and the Living Desert tour) combined with one night in Walvis Bay (for the lagoon atmosphere and the early-morning catamaran departure) gives the full coastal experience with the best base for each element.
