Experience Namibia from the Sky
Some of Namibia only makes sense from the air. From a light aircraft out of Swakopmund you get the red dunes, the Skeleton Coast, the old river valleys, the shipwrecks and the seal colonies in a single flight, all the country that is hard to reach or hard to read from the ground.
The dune sea, the coastline where the desert runs into the Atlantic, and the empty stretches with no roads all sit differently when you are a few thousand feet above them. Routes range from a short coastal loop to a longer trip inland to Sossusvlei.
We fly with experienced pilots. The flights suit photographers, and anyone who wants to see the desert from a seat by the window.
Standard Sossusvlei Scenic Flight
Dauer: Etwa 2 Stunden 15 Minuten
Our most popular flight, and the one that pairs the desert with the coast.
After leaving Swakopmund Airport you head inland over the Kuiseb Canyon and across the Namib towards Sossusvlei. On the way you pass over Tsondabvlei, a breeding area for the rare Lappet-faced Vulture, before the orange dunes that made Sossusvlei famous come into view.
The way back runs down the Skeleton Coast, crossing the restricted diamond area where abandoned settlements still stand. You carry on over Conception Bay and along the coast past Cape Fur Seal colonies and two well-known shipwrecks, the Eduard Bohlen and the Shawnee.
Along the desert edge you see the point where the Atlantic meets the world’s oldest desert, then reach Sandwich Harbour, where the dunes drop straight into the sea. The flight finishes over the Walvis Bay lagoon, salt works and harbour before returning to Swakopmund.

Leaving Swakopmund, you cross the Moon Landscape and follow the Swakop and Khan River valleys towards the southern Namib. Over the coastal dunes you reach the Atlantic near Conception Bay and turn along the Skeleton Coast.
From the air you get the Eduard Bohlen and Shawnee shipwrecks, Cape Fur Seal colonies, and the long line where the Atlantic waves meet the dunes.

You start over the Moon Landscape, then pass the Rössing Uranium Mine and the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe. The route runs north past the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain, and along the Ugab River, where you may spot desert-adapted elephants, oryx and ostrich.
At the coast the flight turns south along the Skeleton Coast, over empty beaches, old shipwrecks and rough country.
The main draw is Cape Cross, home to around 250,000 Cape Fur Seals. On the way back you also fly over Henties Bay, the Zeila shipwreck, Wlotzkasbaken and the coastal salt works.

You reach the coast at the Shawnee shipwreck, then turn north to Sandwich Harbour, where the dunes meet the ocean. From there it is over the Walvis Bay wetlands and lagoon, past Namibia’s busiest harbour, and back to Swakopmund.

Why Choose a Scenic Flight in Swakopmund?
A flight shows you what the ground cannot: the dunes, the canyons, the dry riverbeds, the shipwrecks, the seal colonies, and the line where the Namib runs into the Atlantic.
A short coastal flight or a longer run to Sossusvlei or Cape Cross both come back with photographs you cannot get from a road.
Book ahead, especially in peak season. These are among the busiest activities in Swakopmund and seats go early.
Pair your flight with a day on the ground
- Sandwich Harbour 4×4 tour: the dunes you flew over, on the ground.
- Marine and dune combo: a boat cruise plus desert in one day.
- Hot air balloon over Sossusvlei: the sunrise balloon alternative.
- Best time to visit Sossusvlei
