Sossusvlei Self-Drive Guide: Gates, Roads and Getting Around

Sossusvlei is a highly self-drive-friendly destination with a single main road, clear signage, and a logical sequence of sites. The logistics that require planning are the gate timing, the shuttle system, and the pre-gate access question for inside-gate guests.

The Road System

Sesriem Gate to 2×4 parking (60km): Tar road; 2WD accessible; any vehicle. 2×4 parking to Sossusvlei pan (5km): Deep sand track; 4×4 required or NWR shuttle. Sesriem Canyon: 4km from gate on a spur road; 2WD; signposted. Elim Dune road: 5km from camp on gravel; 2WD; accessible to inside-gate guests when park road is closed.

Gate Hours and the Pre-Gate Advantage

Gate opening (day visitors): One hour after sunrise Gate opening (inside-gate guests): One hour before sunrise (this is the pre-gate window) Gate closing: One hour after sunset

The pre-gate window gives inside-gate guests a 2-hour head start over day visitors. In June (sunrise 07:00), the gate opens to day visitors at 08:00, but inside-gate guests can enter from 06:00. At Dune 45 by 06:30, they have had 90 minutes of undisturbed dune access before the first day visitor arrives.

The Shuttle System

From the 2×4 parking area, NWR operates shuttle services to Sossusvlei pan and back. Current schedule and pricing are posted at the parking area; check nwr.com.na for advance information.

Practical notes:

  • The shuttle fills in peak season; arrive at the 2×4 parking early
  • The last shuttle back is timed to allow return to the gate before closing
  • Shuttle tickets are purchased at the parking area; cash and card accepted
  • The shuttle does not serve Hidden Vlei (that requires a separate walk)

Speed Limit and Regulations

60km/h maximum on all park roads. The main road from gate to parking is well-maintained; the surface is safe at 60km/h and speed humps near the gate keep entry speeds low.

Do not exit your vehicle on the main road between the gate and the 2×4 parking except at designated pulloff areas. The park regulations prohibit roadside vehicle exits.

Fuel and Supplies

Fuel is not available inside the park. The last fuel from the Windhoek direction is at Solitaire (90km from Sesriem). The last fuel from the Swakopmund direction is also at Solitaire.

Fill completely at Solitaire. The NWR Sesriem camp shop sells limited supplies (water, basic snacks) but is not a substitute for proper provisioning before arrival.
