The Skeleton Coast and Damaraland are adjacent, the coastal wilderness and the volcanic inland wilderness, but the connection between them requires driving inland through the Namib gravel plains.
The Routes
Via Uis (through the central Damaraland): From the C34 south of Henties Bay, the D2303 runs east through the gravel plains toward Uis (approximately 150km on good gravel). From Uis, the main Damaraland circuit (Twyfelfontein, Khorixas, Vingerklip) is accessible.
This is the most direct connection and the route that best shows the transition from coastal fog desert to the volcanic interior landscape of Damaraland.
Via Kamanjab (for northern Damaraland): From the C34, continue north to Terrace Bay then access Khorixas via the D2620 east. Or from the Ugab River gate, the D2603 east leads toward Khorixas. This route suits visitors heading for the Palmwag area or the western Damaraland sites.
What the Connection Shows
The drive from the Skeleton Coast east into Damaraland is one of the more dramatic landscape transitions in Namibia. The flat, pale, fog-influenced coastal gravel gives way, over 100km of inland driving, to the orange and brown volcanic terrain of the Damaraland interior. The transition is gradual but cumulative.
