Victoria Falls sits at the junction of the Zambezi and Botswana borders, 90km from Katima Mulilo and 170km from the wildlife lodges of the western Zambezi Region. The Kazungula Bridge crossing (opened 2021) has transformed this connection: the old pontoon ferry that once caused significant delays has been replaced by a road bridge, making the Botswana border crossing straightforward.
The Drive
Katima Mulilo → B8 east → Kazungula Bridge (Namibia-Botswana border) → Kasane, Botswana → A33 → Kazungula, Zambia → Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Total from Katima Mulilo: approximately 150km including both border crossings; 2.5 to 3 hours.
Border crossings: The Namibia-Botswana crossing at Kazungula Bridge is straightforward (passports, vehicle documents, road tax for Botswana). The Botswana-Zimbabwe crossing at Kazungula town requires the same. Both crossings are operational from approximately 06:00 to 20:00.
Viktoriafällen
Victoria Falls is the world’s largest waterfall by volume: 1,700 metres wide, up to 108 metres high, and generating a plume of spray visible from 50km away in flood season. The falls are on the Zambezi River at the boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia; both sides offer access, with Zimbabwe providing the more complete view of the main falls.
Activities at the Falls: Guided walks to the viewpoints; helicopter flights; bungee jumping; white-water rafting (below the falls); sunset cruises on the Zambezi above the falls; Chobe National Park day trips from Victoria Falls.
Combining with the Zambezi Region: The wildlife of the western Zambezi Region (Kwando, Mudumu) and the spectacle of Victoria Falls are natural companions. Three nights in the Zambezi Region followed by two nights at Victoria Falls covers both without backtracking.
