Opuwo is the regional capital of the Kunene Region and the end of organised Namibia as it is understood in most of the country. The tar road from Kamanjab to the south-east runs out here; everything beyond Opuwo in the direction of the Kunene River and the Marienfluss is gravel, track, and eventually no track.
The town is the last reliable fuel, food, and ATM for any traveller heading into the Kaokoland interior. It is also a functioning Namibian town with a hospital, government offices, and a market that serves the surrounding Himba and Herero communities.
The Market
The market area in the centre of Opuwo is where the region’s cultural diversity is most visible. Himba women in traditional dress, otjize-covered skin, layered metal jewellery, and the specific hairstyles that indicate their social status, come into Opuwo to buy supplies, use banking services, and conduct market transactions. Herero women in their distinctive Victorian-influenced dress (adopted during the German colonial period and maintained as cultural identity) are equally present.
This is not a tourist market. People are doing their shopping. Observing and photographing respectfully is possible; intruding is not. The market provides a natural encounter with the Kaokoland communities in a setting they control.
