Ruacana Falls: Kaokoland’s Other Waterfall

Ruacana Falls sits on the Kunene River approximately 110km east of Opuwo at the town of Ruacana. When flowing at full volume, the falls drop 120 metres over a width of 700 metres, one of the largest waterfalls in southern Africa by volume. The qualification matters: since the Ruacana hydroelectric dam was completed upstream in 1978, the falls only flow when the dam is releasing excess water, typically in years of exceptional Angolan rainfall.

The Seasonal Reality

The Ruacana Dam captures the Kunene’s flow for hydroelectric generation. In most years, the falls receive only a trickle or run dry entirely. In exceptional rainfall years (typically following very strong La Niña events in the Angolan catchment), the dam overflows and the falls run at something approaching their historical volume. When this happens, the spectacle is extraordinary; when it does not, the falls are a dry rock face.

Checking before visiting: The Ruacana power station can be contacted for current flow information; local operators in Opuwo will have up-to-date knowledge of whether the falls are flowing.

The Town of Ruacana

Ruacana is a small town that exists primarily to serve the hydroelectric facility. It has fuel, a basic supermarket, and accommodation at the Ruacana Eha Lodge. It sits at the junction of the C46 from the south and the D3700 toward the Angolan border area, making it a logical fuel and rest stop on routes between the Etosha approaches and Epupa Falls.
