Fish River Canyon Self-Drive Guide

Fish River Canyon is one of Namibia’s most self-drive-accessible major sites. The rim road from Hobas is 2WD passable; the approach roads from Keetmanshoop and from the South African border are tar and good gravel; and the canyon itself (for hikers on the trail) requires no vehicle on the floor.

The Hobas Rim Road

From Hobas camp, a 10km gravel rim road leads to the main viewpoint. 2WD accessible in dry conditions; the surface is maintained regularly. Secondary viewpoints are signposted along the rim road. No exit from vehicles except at designated viewpoints; the canyon edge is unfenced.

The Road Between Hobas and Ai-Ais

The direct route from Hobas to Ai-Ais is 240km via the C37 and B4. This is the only road connection; there is no direct road between the two ends of the canyon (the canyon itself is the only direct route, for hikers).

Road condition: The C37 from Hobas to Grünau is gravel, well-maintained, 2WD accessible. The B4 from Grünau to Ai-Ais is tar.

Vehicle Requirements

2WD: Sufficient for all standard rim visits; Hobas viewpoints; Quivertree Forest; Ai-Ais approach.

4×4: Not required for any standard visitor route. Useful if exploring farm tracks in the surrounding area or if conditions deteriorate after heavy rain.

Tank

Hobas has no fuel station. The nearest fuel is in Keetmanshoop (176km north) or Grünau (approximately 150km south on the B4). Fill completely before approaching either Hobas or Ai-Ais from any direction.
