Hobas Viewpoints: What to Expect at the Canyon Rim

The Hobas rest camp sits on the northern canyon rim. From the camp, a 10km rim road leads to the main viewpoint and several secondary positions along the canyon edge. This road is the day visitor experience at Fish River Canyon; the hiking trail descends from a separate point to begin the floor traverse.

The Main Viewpoint

The principal viewpoint looks south into the canyon’s most dramatic section. The canyon floor is 550m below; the opposite rim is up to 27km away in the widest sections visible from here. The Fish River is visible as a thin, pale line at the canyon bottom in dry season, or a broader dark ribbon in the brief periods of flow.

The viewing platform is a short walk from the end of the rim road. There is no fencing at the edge; the canyon rim is unguarded, which makes the drop immediately present in a way that viewing platforms with railings do not.

Depth of field for photography: The canyon’s scale requires a wide-angle lens to capture the full extent; telephoto lenses are useful for isolating specific sections of canyon wall or the river far below.

Secondary Viewpoints

Three to four additional stopping points along the rim road provide different perspectives. The northernmost viewpoints look into a narrower section where the canyon walls are closer together and the sense of enclosure is greater. The southernmost viewpoints before the main platform are useful for including the canyon curve in a single frame.

Best Timing

Dawn: The early light from the east hits the western canyon walls at a low angle, illuminating the orange-red rock and casting the eastern walls in shadow. The contrast between lit and shaded rock is at its most dramatic.

Dusk: The western light illuminates the eastern walls. The sunset colours on the canyon rim and the slow withdrawal of light from the canyon floor are one of Fish River Canyon’s most photographically compelling moments.

Midday: The overhead sun provides even illumination but minimal drama. Avoid midday photography.
