Halali Rest Camp: Etosha’s Best-Kept Secret

Repeat Etosha visitors consistently cite Halali as their favourite camp. The central position, the kopje setting, the smaller scale, and the floodlit waterhole that delivers quality encounters without Okaukuejo’s crowds combine to make it the most underrated accommodation option in the park.

Location and Setting

Halali sits on a low dolerite kopje in the geographic centre of the park, approximately 70km east of Okaukuejo and 70km west of Namutoni. The rocky terrain of the kopje distinguishes it from both other main camps: the camp layout follows the contours of the rocks, the paths between units wind around boulders, and the atmosphere is more sheltered and enclosed than the flat, open Okaukuejo camp.

Coordinates: 19°02’S, 16°28’E

The path from the camp accommodation to the floodlit waterhole passes through the kopje landscape, which creates a brief bush walk that neither Okaukuejo nor Namutoni can replicate. Klipspringer are occasionally seen on the rocks immediately adjacent to camp.

The Floodlit Waterhole

Halali’s floodlit waterhole is accessed via the kopje path from the main camp area. The viewing deck is smaller and more intimate than Okaukuejo’s enclosure, accommodating approximately 60 to 80 visitors comfortably. In practice, the deck is rarely full except in the highest peak weeks, which means front-row positions are achievable on most visits without early arrival.

Black rhino visit regularly; elephant are consistent. The kopje setting means the surrounding bush is more enclosed than at Okaukuejo, and the atmosphere after dark is particularly atmospheric. Full details at Halali waterhole.

Circuit Access

Halali’s central position is its strategic advantage. The western circuits toward Rietfontein, Goas, and Salvadora are within 30km; the eastern circuits toward Klein Namutoni and Kalkheuwel are within 60km. A Halali-based programme can cover more of the park’s productive waterhole network in a day than either Okaukuejo or Namutoni.

Facilities

Similar to Okaukuejo on a smaller scale: restaurant, swimming pool, petrol station, small shop, and NWR booking assistance. The smaller camp size means the facilities feel less crowded and more personal.
