Sandwich Harbour 4x4 Tour | What to Do in Walvis Bay, Namibia
A Thrilling Adventure Where Desert Meets Ocean: The Sandwich Harbour 4×4 Tour in Walvis Bay, Namibia
Namibia is often called “the land God made in anger”. Yet it has some of the most amazing vistas on the planet. With the Sandwich Harbour 4×4 drive, you get to see one of them up close.
What is Sandwich Harbour and Why Visit?
It is a breathtaking natural bay south of Walvis Bay. Being on the coast of Namibia, the rugged area is one-of-a-kind. The bewitching scenery beckons with interesting animals and surprising plant life. As part of the Namib-Naukluft Parks, the region is also conservation zone.
Understanding the Unique Landscape of Sandwich Harbour
The bay lies where desert and ocean meet. The Namib Sand Sea, a long dune belt, runs from Lüderitz to the Swakop River. The countryside here is pristine, built up from sand the strong sea currents deposit on the beach. Strong winds shape them into fascinating arcs that tower over a natural pond.
Brackish freshwater seeps up from underground aquifers to feed the lagoon. Desert-adapted plants such as the !nara melon tap into the underground reserves to grow many years old.
Why Sandwich Harbour is a Must-See in Namibia
Whether you’re on a classic safari, quick trip or ocean cruise, the 4×4 desert tours are definitely an experience worth doing. There’s the thrill of driving off-road, in a massive sand box far away from everything. The Namib Naukluft is also home to many diverse animals and plants.
But what makes this the ultimate, unforgettable experience is the scenery. On the way through the desert, you will find a spot that takes your breath away. You climb a hill of sand. Round a corner. As your eyes roam the horizon, they adjust and you realise what you’re looking at. Beautiful dunes as far as you can see. Water right below.
This is why you came here. Where the dunes meet the sea and run straight into the ocean. With a little bit of luck, it’s low tide and your guide drives you down the beach, right in between.
What to Expect on a Sandwich Harbour 4×4 Tour?
There are many tour operators and many variations, but the basics are the same. When you book your adventure with Mat-Travel, you get peace of mind knowing that we have thoroughly vetted the available options.
Duration and Itinerary of the Trip
Trips usually go out for half a day or a full day. Half-day excursions can be done in the morning or in the afternoon. They take between 4 and 5 hours. Full-day adventures start mid-morning and are around 6 hours long.
Most begin at the Walvis Bay Waterfront. Pick-ups in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund can be arranged on request. Once everyone is safely settled in the car, the guide takes you on a scenic drive around the Walvis Bay lagoon. As a Ramsar Site, it is a protected wetland and avifauna sanctuary. This includes a visit to the Pink Lakes, a salt mine that makes for spectacular photos.
When you reach the Pelican Point peninsula, you turn south into the Namib Dunes for some off-roading. After about 50km, you reach the Sandwich Harbour lagoon. Depending on the tides, you may get to drive straight down the beach into the bay. If not, your guide will take you to a look-out point above the bay. From here, you can walk down and explore at leisure.
After a delicious lunch, the group makes its way back to the starting point.
What’s Included in the Tour Package?
Refreshments, a light lunch, and a knowledgeable guide. Some operators include the park fees in their price as well – you will be informed beforehand of this.
The guide will take time to stop for the sights and to explain natural phenomena along the way. While all packages include stops for photos, there are specific photographic tours that pay special attention to the light.
There also combo packages. You can add on a catamaran trip or kayaking experience in the morning. A special offer includes a Namibian barbecue (called “braai) on the beach.
What Wildlife Might You Encounter During the Day?
An incredible number of animals survive in the harsh desert environment. Along the first part of the drive, you are likely to see flamingos and sea gulls. A big diversity of shore and sea birds can be spotted along the whole way.
In the desert itself, your guide may suddenly stop and set off running. If so, they likely found one of the many critters that call the desert home. Palmato geckos are tiny, see-through reptiles that hide in the sand. The shovel-snouted lizard is also called the “Ferrari” of the desert because it runs like lightning.
Black-backed jackals are common and with a little bit of luck, you may even see ostrich, gemsbok (oryx) or springbok. If you booked a combo, the boat trip gives you a chance to see Cape fur seals and more feathered friends. There are also sunfish (Mola mola), dolphins and whales – although they are somewhat harder to spot.
How to Get to Walvis Bay for Your Excursion?
On request and for a slight surcharge, transfers and pick-ups can be arranged from your accommodation at the coast. Otherwise, it is a quick and easy drive to the Waterfront. Check-in is normally 30-45 minutes before departure. All the details will be shared with you when you book.
Traveling from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay
First, you take the B2 south. It’s roughly 30km and will take you 30-45 minutes. Once you’re in the harbour town, take Union Street and then 5th Road before turning into Atlantic Road at the port gates. Then, you just follow the signs.
You can also use GPS navigation or a maps app on your phone if you have mobile data (local or roaming).
Best Time of Year to Visit Sandwich Harbour
Namibia’s seasons are quite simple: a wet summer from October to March, and a dry winter from April to September. The summer months are warmer, but not hot at the coast. There is less wind, which can be nice for the afternoon. The winter months can get very cold (around 5-13ºC during the day) and windy. With softer light, they may be better for photography, however.
The weather often changes during the day. In the end, whenever you are in our country and at the coast, a trip to Sandwich Harbour will be memorable and beautiful.
What Makes the Sandwich Harbour Adventure Unique?
Sure, you will not see another region like it anywhere else in Namibia. Driving along and over giant sand dunes with the Atlantic Ocean right there is a special experience.
But there are other ways to see the Namib Desert, such as a scenic flight. You get pelicans on the boat tour, and a closer interaction with the seals when kayaking. A Sandwich package may seem pricey, too – tours range between USD 130-260 per person.
Nonetheless, Sandwich Harbour tours are a bucket list item. In fact, a landscape like this can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. The money is well spent when it lets you dream of the golden desert years down the line. The guides live for their work and make your day extra special – this tour is unlike anything else you can ever do.
