Swakopmund is genuinely a year-round destination. The Benguela Current keeps temperatures moderate throughout the year (8 to 25°C range), there are no extreme seasons, and the core activities (sandboarding, Living Desert tour, kayaking, Sandwich Harbour) are available every month. The variables are fog, flamingo numbers, and whale availability.
The Fog Season: June to August
Inhalt
Dense coastal fog is the defining weather feature of a Swakopmund winter. The fog rolls in from the ocean most mornings, sometimes persisting until 10:00 to 11:00, and creates an atmospheric, slightly eerie quality to the town. For the Living Desert tour, foggy mornings are actually excellent: the fog beetle behaviour is most visible when fog is present, and the chameleon activity is measurable.
For sandboarding and quad biking, fog reduces visibility but does not prevent the activities. For skydiving and paragliding, fog grounds all flights until it clears.
June and July: Coldest months. Overnight temperatures 5 to 10°C; daytime 15 to 20°C. Dense fog common. The atmospheric quality is appealing to some visitors; others prefer the warmer months.
The Warm Season: September to May
September to November marks the transition toward summer: warming temperatures, decreasing fog frequency, and the beginning of the Cape Cross pupping season (October to December, peak for the seal reserve visit).
December to February is the warmest period (20 to 25°C); occasional stronger winds; flamingo numbers building in the lagoon.
March to May is transitional toward winter: settling weather, comfortable temperatures, and the year-round wildlife in good form.
