Windhoek to Etosha: Best Route, Stopovers and Driving Tips

The Windhoek to Etosha drive is the most commonly driven route in Namibia. It is 440km of mostly good road, takes approximately five hours with stops, and is the first driving experience for most international visitors who hire a vehicle and head north. Getting it right sets the tone for the rest of the trip.

Departure Timing

Recommended departure from Windhoek: 07:00 to 08:00

This timing gives a comfortable afternoon arrival at Anderson Gate, allowing check-in at Okaukuejo and a late-afternoon circuit before the first floodlit waterhole session. A 10:00 departure is also workable but limits your first day’s wildlife viewing.

Do not try to reach Etosha from Windhoek in a single push on the day of arrival from an international flight. Jet lag plus five hours of driving plus an Etosha gate that closes at sunset is a combination that produces missed gate arrivals. Spend the first night in Windhoek or Outjo and drive to the gate the following morning.

Key Stops

Okahandja (75km north of Windhoek): A good fuel stop; reliable petrol stations on the main road. The town is also known for its wood carving market; worth 20 minutes if wood sculpture is of interest.

Otjiwarongo (250km): The first significant town. Full services: fuel, supermarket, ATM, restaurants. A comfortable lunch stop before the Outjo section. Allow 45 minutes.

Outjo (310km): The last fully serviced town before Anderson Gate. Fill the tank completely here. Shoprite supermarket for supplies; pharmacy; ATM. This is where you stock up on food and supplies for your Etosha stay.

The Gravel Section

The C38 from Outjo to Anderson Gate is 110km of good gravel. The road is regularly maintained and passable by 2WD vehicles. Speed should be 80km/h or below on gravel; faster than this on corrugated sections is damaging to the vehicle and reduces wildlife spotting dramatically.

Watch for livestock on the approach to Anderson Gate; farming communities border the park and animals on the road are common.

Gate Timing

Confirm the current gate closing time (sunset) before setting out from Outjo. Allow the following time from Outjo to the gate and from the gate to Okaukuejo:

  • Outjo to Anderson Gate: 1.5 hours
  • Anderson Gate to Okaukuejo: 25 minutes

If you arrive at Outjo at 14:00, you have adequate time. If you arrive at Outjo at 16:00, you are cutting it very fine for a summer gate closing of 18:30 to 19:00. Adjust your departure time from Windhoek accordingly.
