The northern boundary of the Skeleton Coast wilderness is the Kunene River, the border with Angola. On the eastern side of that river corridor, the terrain transitions into Kaokoland: the Kunene Region of north-western Namibia with Epupa Falls, the Himba communities, and the remote valleys of the Marienfluss and Hartmann.
The Connection for Fly-In Visitors
The most practical connection from the northern Skeleton Coast to Kaokoland is by aircraft. Fly-in visitors at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp or Skeleton Coast Camp can continue by aircraft to the Kaokoland area; several operators offer fly-in circuits that combine both regions.
A flight from the northern Skeleton Coast camps to Epupa Falls or to the Marienfluss Valley covers in an hour terrain that a vehicle expedition would take three to four days to cross.
The Connection for 4×4 Expedition Travellers
For expedition travellers with serious 4×4 capability, the Kaokoland approach from the east (via Opuwo) connects to the Kunene River at Epupa Falls; the Skeleton Coast is then accessible via permitted desert tracks. This is an expedition-level undertaking requiring full self-sufficiency, local knowledge, and appropriate permits.
