Wann ist die beste Zeit um den Fischfluss Canyon zu besuchen?

The answer to “when is the best time to visit Fish River Canyon” depends on whether you are hiking or viewing.

For Hikers: May to September Only

The hiking trail is available 1 May to 15 September. Outside this window, the canyon floor temperatures are dangerous (above 40°C regularly; occasionally above 50°C). The restriction is absolute and enforced for good reason.

Within the hiking season:

  • May and September: Temperatures on the canyon floor can still reach 35 to 38°C in the afternoon; early starts (05:00) are essential.
  • June and July: The coolest months; daytime canyon floor temperatures 25 to 32°C; the most comfortable hiking conditions.
  • August: Similar to June and July; slightly warmer toward month end.

June and July are the optimal hiking months for comfortable temperatures. They are also the most in-demand for permits; book 6 months ahead.

For Rim Visitors: Year-Round

The canyon rim viewpoints are accessible and worthwhile year-round. The photography windows (dawn and dusk) deliver consistent quality throughout the year. Summer (October to March) brings higher temperatures above the canyon (30 to 40°C) but the rim is more comfortable than the floor.

Summer advantage: More dramatic skies; occasional thunderstorm photography opportunities; green vegetation at the Quivertree Forest after rain.

Winter advantage (June to August): Cooler; clearer air; better photography visibility.

For the Quivertree Forest

The Quivertree Forest photographs well year-round. Astrophotography opportunities are best at new moon in any month; June to August provide the clearest skies for this purpose.
