Okapuka Ranch is a private game ranch 40km north of Windhoek on the B1, positioned as a day trip or short-stay option for visitors who want wildlife encounters close to the capital. The ranch holds a managed game population (lion, cheetah, and a range of antelope species) and operates guided game drives and predator encounters.
The Activities
Guided game drives: Vehicle-based game drives through the ranch’s game area; giraffe, zebra, antelope, and at times the ranch’s lion and cheetah are seen.
Predator feedings: At scheduled times, the ranch’s managed lion and cheetah population is fed in view of guests. This is a managed, non-wild encounter, the animals are in an enclosed area, but produces close-range views of large predators that are otherwise difficult to achieve near Windhoek.
Restaurant: A good-quality restaurant at the ranch facilities; lunch and dinner available for day visitors; popular with Windhoek residents for weekend dining.
Who It Suits
Okapuka suits:
- Business travellers in Windhoek who want wildlife without a multi-day safari
- Families with children who want animal encounters close to Windhoek
- Visitors whose itinerary does not include Etosha and who want some wildlife experience
It does not replicate the wild game drive experience; the encounters are managed and the reserve is not a national park. As a proximity wildlife option close to the capital, it works well within those parameters.
Booking: Through the Okapuka website; day trips and overnight accommodation available.
