The Waterberg Wilderness Trail: 4-Day Guided Hiking

The Waterberg Wilderness Trail is a guided 4-day hike on the plateau, operated by NWR with experienced local guides. It is one of Namibia’s least-known multi-day trails and one of its most rewarding: the wildlife encounters on foot, the specific geological landscape of the plateau, and the quality of the guiding available from guides who have worked the plateau for years combine to produce an experience that most visitors find exceeds their expectations.

Die Route

The trail circles a significant portion of the plateau, departing from and returning to the Bernabé de la Bat rest camp. The daily stages cover between 10 and 12km on terrain that mixes grassland, light woodland, rocky outcrops, and cliff-edge sections with views across the surrounding plain.

Wildlife on the trail: White rhino encounters are the highlight; the guide tracks actively and approaches when safe. Roan and sable sightings on foot are a specific advantage over vehicle encounters, you move quietly through the same space as the animals rather than approaching from a road. Giraffe, warthog, and smaller antelope species are encountered daily.

The huts: Basic overnight huts at three points on the circuit; sleeping space, a basic kitchen area with a gas burner, and toilet facilities. Not comfortable in the lodge sense, but adequate and set in locations chosen for the plateau views.

Was sollte ich mitbringen?

  • Sleeping bag (the plateau nights are cold May to August)
  • 4 days of food (all self-catering; carry from the rest camp)
  • Water bottles (3 litres minimum capacity; the guide knows the reliable water sources)
  • Hiking boots with ankle support
  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, long sleeves)
  • Rain gear (the plateau receives afternoon thunderstorms in summer)

Booking

Book through nwr.com.na. The trail requires advance booking (the guide must be confirmed); availability is generally better here than at Etosha or Sossusvlei. Minimum group of 3; if travelling as a pair, enquire whether NWR can combine groups.
