Swakopmund to Sossusvlei: The Coastal Approach Route

The drive from Swakopmund to Sossusvlei runs south-east through the central Namib, passing from the fog desert of the coast through the gravel plains of the middle Namib to the dune sea east of Sesriem. It is one of the more visually compelling approach routes to any Namibia destination: the landscape changes continuously over four hours of driving, and the approach to the first significant dunes in the final 30km to Sesriem is one of those arrival sequences that rewards a slow pace.

What You Drive Through

The C14 south from Swakopmund passes through the Namib’s central gravel zone: pale grey plains extending to distant mountain ranges, occasional inselbergs rising abruptly from the flat surface, and the characteristic sense of space that the Namib delivers better than any other Namibia environment.

Wildlife is sparse but present: oryx on the plains, sociable weaver nests on telephone poles, pale chanting goshawk on roadside perches. The Welwitschia plants of the central Namib are accessible on a detour east of Swakopmund on the C28/D1982; the Welwitschia Flats are worth an hour if this is a priority.

Solitaire marks the transition from the gravel plains to the pre-dune zone. From Solitaire south-east on the C19, the landscape changes: the surface becomes redder, the distant dune outlines appear on the eastern horizon, and the anticipation of Sesriem builds through the final hour.
