The Windhoek to Sossusvlei drive is one of the most satisfying road journeys in Namibia. The first half follows tar through the Khomas Highland and the southern edge of the Namib transition zone; the second half enters the desert proper on good gravel, with the first dunes becoming visible in the final 30km.

Key Stops
Rehoboth (90km): First significant town south of Windhoek. Good fuel stations (Caltex, Engen), a supermarket, and ATM. Stock up on supplies here if you have not done so in Windhoek.
Solitaire (270km from Windhoek): The essential fuel stop before Sesriem. Fill the tank completely regardless of your fuel state. The bakery apple pie and the rusting vehicles make this a worthwhile 30-minute stop. See the Solitaire guide.
Sesriem Gate: Pay entry fees and check in. If arriving before the camp reception closes (typically 18:00 to 19:00), check in immediately. If arriving late afternoon, drive directly to Elim Dune for the sunset before checking in.
Arrival Timing Strategy
Arriving before 15:00: Time for Sesriem Canyon (90-minute walk) and then Elim Dune at sunset. A productive first afternoon.
Arriving 15:00 to 16:30: Time for Elim Dune only. Skip the canyon; do it the following morning or on departure.
Arriving after 16:30: Drive directly to Elim Dune (5km from camp); sunset is approximately 18:00 to 19:00 depending on season.
Departure Timing
Heading from Sossusvlei to Windhoek: Allow 5 hours total. If flying from Windhoek the same evening, depart Sesriem no later than 12:00. Hosea Kutako International Airport check-in typically 2 hours before departure.
