Wolwedans is not in Sossusvlei. This is the critical clarification that travel agents and visitors need to make first. The Wolwedans camps are in NamibRand Nature Reserve, approximately 30km south of Sesriem on a private reserve road. The landscape is completely different from the Sossusvlei dune sea, grass plains, ancient inselbergs, fossilised river terraces, and open desert that extends to the horizon in every direction.
Wolwedans is not a substitute for the Sossusvlei dune experience. It is the complement to it.
The Wolwedans Collection
Wolwedans Dune Lodge: The original and most established NamibRand lodge, perched on a low dune edge with elevated wooden decks that look across the grass plain. Eight rooms; full board; guided walking and vehicle safaris on the NamibRand reserve. The deck views at sunset and the dark sky at night are its specific selling points.
Wolwedans Boulders Camp: A smaller, more intimate camp among the reserve’s granite boulders. Five tented rooms; quieter and more secluded than the Dune Lodge; appeals to guests who prefer a smaller group.
Wolwedans Private Camp: Available for exclusive hire; six rooms; private guide; the most exclusive option in the reserve.
What NamibRand Delivers
Walking safaris: Unlike Sossusvlei, where walking is limited to designated dune climbs, NamibRand allows guided walking anywhere on the private reserve. Walks focus on the small-scale desert ecology: tracks, invertebrates, desert plants, geological features.
Dark sky: NamibRand’s International Dark Sky Reserve designation makes it one of the best accessible astrophotography locations in Africa. The Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and the full depth of the southern sky are visible without any light pollution. See the astrophotography guide.
Solitude: NamibRand’s restricted visitor numbers and large area ensure a level of solitude impossible at Sossusvlei in peak season.
Wildlife: Oryx, springbok, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, bat-eared fox, and occasional cheetah on a landscape that belongs entirely to the lodge guests.
How to Combine with Sossusvlei
The standard programme: two nights inside the gate at Sossusvlei (the dune experience) followed by two nights at Wolwedans (the NamibRand experience). This four-night combination covers the full range of the central Namib.
Booking: through Wolwedans directly or through agents. NamibRand books out well in advance for peak season. Contact Mat-Travel for current availability.
