Sandwich Harbour is one of those landscapes that takes a moment to fully register. You drive south from Walvis Bay along the beach at low tide, the dunes rising above the high water mark on the left and the surf running in from the right, until you reach the point where the beach narrows to nothing: the dune face drops directly into the tidal lagoon, and the lagoon opens into the Atlantic beyond. The dunes of the southern Namib and the Atlantic Ocean occupy the same few metres of space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lagoon is sheltered and shallow; flamingo and pelican feed at its margins; Cape fur seals haul out on the northern beach. Behind everything, the dune crests rise 60 to 80 metres above sea level and provide an elevated view of the full site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sandwich Harbour is 50km south of Walvis Bay. The access requires driving along the beach at low tide and crossing several dune sections above the high water mark. This route is passable only at low tide on the beach sections and requires a 4×4 with recovery experience or a guided operator who knows the tidal windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided tours:<\/strong> All major Swakopmund and Walvis Bay operators run Sandwich Harbour 4×4 tours. The operators know the current tide tables and drive the route daily; their timing is reliable and their recovery equipment is appropriate for the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-drive:<\/strong> Is only allowed when accompanied by a registered tour operator. Some confidence driving a 4×4 is recommended, while an experienced guide leads the route and safely navigates the tides and terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wildlife<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Flamingo:<\/strong> The Sandwich Harbour lagoon supports a smaller flamingo population than the main Walvis Bay lagoon but the proximity allows closer observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelican:<\/strong> Cape pelicans use the Sandwich Harbour beach and lagoon margin as a resting area; flocks of several hundred are common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cape fur seals:<\/strong> A resident seal group uses the beach north of the lagoon entrance; guides typically stop here for extended observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other birds:<\/strong> The coastal scrub and lagoon margins support a range of species including various wading birds, terns, and gulls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dune Climb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most guided Sandwich Harbour tours include a dune climb above the beach to the crest that overlooks the full lagoon-dune-ocean interface. The view from 60 to 80 metres above the lagoon, looking down at the entire scene simultaneously, is the definitive Sandwich Harbour experience and the photography priority for most visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
