It is free to visit, requires no guide or booking, and rises approximately 120 metres above the surrounding plain, making it one of the taller accessible dunes in the coastal Namib. For visitors who want a dune climbing experience without the operator-organised sandboarding programme, Dune 7 is the self-directed alternative.

The Climb and View

The climb follows the dune ridge to the crest: 20 to 30 minutes for fit visitors, longer in soft sand conditions. The view from the crest looks back over Walvis Bay and the lagoon, with the Rooikop salt works visible as a pink expanse to the south-west. The ocean horizon is visible to the west; the dune sea extends east.

The slide down the slip face is the reward: faster than expected and significantly more pleasant than the climb.

Praktische Notizen

Access: 7km east of Walvis Bay on the C14; left turn signposted “Dune 7”; parking area at the dune base

Entry fee: None; public access

Facilities: A small café and picnic area at the base

Best time: Early morning before the heat; the dune base faces west and the crest catches afternoon light for photography

Sandboarding: Informal sandboarding is common here; bring a plastic bag or purchase a basic board at the café area.
