The NWR campsite fee puts you inside the national park, within walking distance of the floodlit waterhole, with access to the same rest camp facilities used by chalet guests. The wildlife experience is identical to that of any other accommodation tier; the comfort level is the only variable.

What Etosha Camping Is

Unlike wild camping in Damaraland | Namibia, camping in Etosha is not remote or self-sufficient. The campsites are within the fenced perimeter of the three main rest camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, Namutoni), with full facilities on site.

What is provided:

Electricity connection at most pitches

Communal ablution blocks (flush toilets, hot showers)

Braai grids at each pitch

Access to the camp restaurant, pool, and shop

Access to the floodlit waterhole (the same access as chalet guests)

Security within the fenced camp perimeter

What you bring:

Your tent or rooftop tent setup

Sleeping gear

Cooking equipment and food (for self-catering; restaurant available as alternative)

Facilities at Each Camp

Okaukuejo: The largest campsite with the most pitches; electricity at most sites; closest proximity to the floodlit waterhole; best facilities. The busiest in peak season.

Halali: Medium-sized campsite; electricity available; quieter than Okaukuejo; kopje setting adds atmosphere.

Namutoni: Smaller campsite; eastern section wildlife access; Fischer’s Pan proximity.

Booking

All Etosha campsites are booked through nwr.com.na. In peak season (June to August), book as early as NWR allows (typically 6 months ahead). Specific pitch preferences can sometimes be requested but are not guaranteed.

Overlanders who carry their own rooftop tents may prefer to specify this to NWR reception on arrival to be allocated an appropriate pitch.

Self-Catering vs Restaurant

Both options work well. Self-catering from supplies bought in Outjo or Tsumeb before entry is significantly cheaper than camp restaurant meals and allows for early departure without waiting for breakfast service. The camp restaurants produce decent food at reasonable prices and are convenient for tired arrivals.

Contact Mat-Travel for camping-based Etosha programme support and vehicle hire recommendations for overlanders.

Camping inside Etosha is the best-value wildlife accommodation in Namibia.
