They are a different experience category, defined primarily by what they offer that the park’s self-drive infrastructure cannot: night drives on private land, walking safaris, and guided encounters with wildlife that the regulated park environment restricts.

The decision to include a private lodge in an Etosha programme is therefore not primarily a comfort decision; it is an access decision. If night drives and walking rhino encounters matter to you, a private lodge night is worth the cost. If they do not matter as much as full-day self-drive flexibility, NWR accommodation is the right choice.

Ongava Game Reserve

The most significant private operation adjacent to Etosha. Ongava is a 30,000-hectare private game reserve immediately south of the park, sharing the Anderson Gate approach road and a long boundary with western Etosha.

Ongava holds both black and white rhino on private land, lion (that move freely between the reserve and the park), elephant, cheetah, and leopard. The reserve’s management maintains these populations independently of NWR.

Guided activities: Night drives on private land (regular leopard, aardvark, brown hyena encounters); guided walking rhino approach; standard game drives; optional guided day drives into the national park.

The walking rhino encounter: The signature Ongava activity. A professional guide and tracker approach white or black rhino on foot, reaching close enough for an extended observation. This activity is not available inside Etosha at any price point.

Accommodation options (multiple camps):

Ongava Lodge: The flagship property; twelve chalets with private plunge pools; full luxury; the most expensive option.

Little Ongava: Three exclusive cottages; private guiding; the most exclusive option on the reserve.

Andersson’s Camp at Ongava: Mid-range tented camp; full access to all Ongava activities; the most accessible price point for the guided walking and night drive experience.

Ongava Tented Camp: Mid-level option between Andersson’s and the flagship lodge.

Other Private Lodges

Etosha Aoba Lodge (Anderson Gate area): Small, intimate lodge with good guiding and a genuine community feel. Night drives on the surrounding property. Mid-range pricing. A good value option for visitors who want guided activities without full Ongava pricing.

Etosha Safari Lodge (Anderson Gate area): Mid-range; swimming pool; accessible pricing; standard game drives; does not offer the walking rhino activity. Good option for budget-conscious visitors who want private lodge atmosphere.

Mushara Collection (Von Lindequist Gate area): Three camps at different price points (Mushara Bush Camp, Mushara Lodge, Mushara Outpost). Well-positioned for eastern Etosha access. Good birdwatching from the property. Night drives available.

Mokuti Etosha Lodge (Von Lindequist Gate area): Larger property; good facilities; pool; birding on the property grounds. More resort-like than safari in character.

Toshari Lodge (King Nehale Gate area): Mid-range; northern Etosha entry; community-focused. Useful for visitors entering via King Nehale from Damaraland | Namibia.

Booking Private Lodges

Private lodges book independently of NWR. Ongava in particular books out 6 to 9 months ahead for peak season. For any Etosha programme that includes Ongava, book Ongava first and build the NWR programme around it.

Contact Mat-Travel for trade rates, availability checks, and programme co-ordination across private and NWR accommodation.

The private lodges immediately outside Etosha’s boundaries are not simply an alternative to NWR rest camps.
