The combination of a resident pride that has used the area for years, large prey herds that concentrate at the waterhole, and a terrain that allows extended observation from the vehicle pulloff makes Rietfontein the most consistently productive predator waterhole in the park.

It does not always deliver, because nothing in wildlife guarantees delivery. But the probability across a dry-season visit is meaningfully higher than at most alternatives.

The Setting

Rietfontein is positioned in the central section of Etosha, accessible from both Halali and Okaukuejo on moderately long circuit drives. The waterhole sits in open bush with good sightlines from the parking area. The surrounding acacia provides cover for predators at rest, but the approach roads allow scanning the area from a distance before arrival, which is useful for spotting a resting pride before you pull up and potentially disturb them.

The Lion Pride

A resident lion pride has used the Rietfontein area for years. Its membership changes over time as individuals die, new cubs are born, and young males disperse, but the pride’s territory reliably encompasses Rietfontein waterhole as a core hunting area. In peak dry season the pride uses the waterhole ambush strategy described in the lion guide: positioning downwind of the water and waiting for prey species that must drink.

The combination of the pride’s consistency and the large prey herds that use Rietfontein makes this the most likely location in the park for witnessing predation: an actual hunt or kill rather than resting lions that are several hours from any action.

Tactics

Arrive early. The lion ambush strategy is most productive in the cooler hours of dawn and dusk. An arrival at Rietfontein at 07:00 gives the best chance of finding the pride in an active or pre-hunt posture.

Scan before pulling up. On the approach road, stop 200 to 300 metres from the waterhole pulloff and glass the area with binoculars. A pride in cover near the waterhole is sometimes visible from this distance; arriving at the formal pulloff position in ignorance of their location can disrupt the situation.

Stay if you find them. If the pride is present and in the ambush position, park and wait. The activity may take twenty minutes or two hours. Leave only when you have confirmed the hunt has either succeeded or the pride has given up and moved to shade.

Prey behaviour as a signal. Zebra and wildebeest circling the waterhole hesitantly, particularly if they are staring in a fixed direction, almost certainly indicates predator presence. This signal is visible well before the predator is.

For the full predator waterhole comparison, see best waterholes for lion in Etosha.

Among Etosha’s experienced visitors, Rietfontein carries a specific reputation: if you want lion, this is where you go.
